Karen Vera (Cardo) Moen

Karen Vera (Cardo) Moen, 83, of Wisconsin Rapids, WI went home to be with the Lord on September 9th , 2025

Karen was born January 3rd , 1942 in rural Adams County, WI to Allen and Gladys (Smith) Cardo. She graduated from Adams Friendship High School and went on to attend Waushara County Teachers College, UW Stevens Point, UW Madison, and Mid State Technical School. Karen’s passion for teaching lead her to De George Elementary, Adams Friendship school system, Cedarburg, and the Head Start programs in Milwaukee, Auburndale, Adams and Marshfield. While living in Marshfield, Karen held positions at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Duo-Fast and Weyerhauser.

Karen married the love of her life, Sanford Moen in 1976. The two especially enjoyed gardening and their yearly vacations. In 1990 the two settled in Lindsey, WI where they resided until Sanford’s death in 2006. Shortly after, Karen moved to Wisconsin Rapids to be closer to her son, Jim, and his two children, Cheyenne (CJ) and Dakota. She was an important figure in their lives, being a blessing to them all. Karen was such an integral part of Dakota’s life as a child that showed how much family meant to her. The time spent, care given, and memories made will not be forgotten. She was a steady and constant presence for her family; seeing them through every trial and struggle life threw at them. When not enjoying time with her family, Karen enjoyed gardening, crocheting, cooking, and of course watching The Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers.

Karen was preceded in death by her loving husband Sanford Moen, parents Allen and Gladys Cardo, brother John Allen, sister Donna Foster and brother Gerald Cardo.

She is survived by her son Jim Cardo (Joe’l); grandchildren Dakota and Cheyenne (CJ) Cardo and great grandchildren Aiden and Ryder; daughter Babette Hedberg, and step-daughter Andrea Pelot (Eugene) and her daughters Kaja Pelot and Tiana Bush (Cody), brother Richard (Arlene) and sister Lila Thorson.
