Ryan was born October 29, 1991 in Rockford, Illinois to RaeAnn Larson and Richard Himmel. He moved to Adams Friendship in 1992. He attended Castle Rock Elementary School. He was an active, lively, interested student. He was involved in Youth Football, Green Demon Wrestling, and Little League Baseball. In middle school, he was active in wrestling, baseball, student council, and played trumpet in the band. He was the first boy to do flag corp for Cadet Band. He had the inner strength to do what others couldnt. He was confirmed in 8th grade as a member of the United in Christ Lutheran Church in Dellwood.

In High School he continued to play in the band, bowled on the Mauston Bowling Team, wrestled, ran cross country and track, was a member of the freshmen baseball team, and played some AF golf. He was Student Council School Board Representative and was voted class President his senior year, all while staying on the honor roll all four years.

He always had a passion to serve his country. He decided the Army was the best fit for him. He enlisted his Junior year and left for basic training 10 days after graduating from High School. His belief was to protect the people he loved. He was eager to deploy to Afghanistan and so excited to be able serve his country.

Ryan always had a twinkle in his eye and smile on his face which made him a friend to all. He had a caring heart, and a good ear to anyone in need. He was well known for being an avid Bears fan.

I’m not at all surprised at what a fine young man Ryan grew up to be. He brought me a flower in the last day of school at Castle Rock Elementary knowing I would not be there the next year. That was the last time I saw him but I’ve always thought of him whenever I see buttercups. Thank you Ryan for your service and so sorry to his family for their loss. I have a bouquet of buttercups on my table and will have every year in his memory.

I want to send my heartfelt condolences to the loss of your son, brother, grandson and best friend. I know all too well how this is and unless someone else has been through it, it is hard for them to truly understand. I lost my Dad in Vietnam and I just wanted to let you know we are a family when it comes to this type of loss.

May your family find peace in the days to come and know that Ryan is now in the arms of the angels. God bless all of you!

  12. Donna Griego says:

God bless you Ryan Larson, I read several articles about you and all of the comments posted here. Reading the articles told me much about who you were. You were an honor roll student, that tells me you did not have to enlist in the military, you could have went to college, you probably could have went to most any college, and done so on a scholarship….but you enlisted instead.

When you took the test to see what jobs you qualified for, you scored high…and yet you enlisted 11B…at the time of your enlistment there was no enlistment bonus…so noone can say that you did it for the money. You were just 19, fresh out of school. You chose one of the most physically demanding positions the Army offers, and one of its dangerous ones. This tells me you had heart, the ability to reach down deep inside oneself and find the strength to endure hardship.

In reading about you here I found out that you were a joyful person, and your smile lit up a room and lit up the hearts of those around you. You loved a young lady and her parents thought the world of you. Others say that you never once looked down on anyone; you were a friend to all. You loved the Army and were very happy with what you were doing with your life.

So many people mentioned that you had a special sense of joy and adventure and that you always left them laughing. And another said that you had a bright soul that shined like the sun.

Although when I gaze upon your picture I see a bright and cheerful young boy, so fresh and full of life, your comrades in arms state that you were a great soldier and a good man and that they will never forget you. They say you had a good and brave heart.

Thank you PFC Ryan Larson, for your service, without men such as you our nation would be bereft of all its strength and hope. I am so very sorry that your willingness to serve and protect us has cost you your life. I shall ever be grateful and your name shall be added to my remembrance list, and you shall be honored in my home until the day I die. May God grant all comfort and peace to those who loved you, and may they dwell in the security and knowledge that they will see you again, for you dwell in a better place, a place where your bright soul can truly shine like the sun.

    I am the Infantry
I am my country’s strength in war,
    her deterrant in peace.
I am the heart of the fight
    whereever, whenever.
I carry America’s faith and honor
    against her enemies.
I am the Queen of Battle.
I am what my country expects me to be,
the best trained soldier in the world
    in the race for victory.
I am swift, determined, and courageous,
armed with a fierce will to win.
Never will I fail my country’s trust.
    Always will I fight on
through the foe, to the objective, to triumph over all.
If neccessary I will fight to my death.
By my steadfast courage I have won 200 years of freedom.
I yeild not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superiour odds.
For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight.
I forsake not my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty.
    I am relentless
I am always there, now and forever
    I am the Infantry
    Follow me!

The future can only be determined by the obstacles we face today. PFC Ryan Larson was an outstanding person to be around. I had the pleasure of getting to know him from my Kindergarten to my 7th grade year, he was a grade ahead of me. I would like to commend his parents for rasing such a fine young gentleman. Never once was he judgemental of anyone. He was a very respectful person with a smile that could make anyone’s day. Ryan was a leader, one whom many wanted to follow. He will be greatly missed! He may be gone but all the memories will live on forever, for a HERO never dies. May the wings of the eagle raise you up to the Heavens above. Rest in Peace Soldier, God Speed!

  93. Trea Kimball says:

Dear Raeann, Ellen and family: Ryan spent 90 minutes every day for four years in my classroom. After all that time, I still never got tired of seeing him or talking to him. I think I learned as much from him as he did from me and I will certainly miss his leadership, loyalty and infectious smile. He touched the lives of all of our band "family" at AFHS and his spirit will be honored and his legacy remembered for years to come. Best wishes as you heal and remember Ryan with smiles instead of tears.
