Henry C. Krass

Henry C. Krass, age 82, of Mauston, Wisconsin died Thursday, October 20, 2011. Henry formerly resided for 25 years in Downers Grove, IL. At retirement, Henry and his wife moved to Arkdale, WI. After residing in Arkdale for 20 years and because of health reasons they moved to Mauston, WI.

Henry was born on November 19, 1928 in Chicago, IL. In 1948 he received a congressional appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy located in Kingspoint, N.Y. At graduation from the Academy he received his Bachelor Degree, a Navy Commission as Ensign and a 3rd Mates Maritime license. In 1952 he was assigned ship duty for the Navy during the Korean War. While on a short military leave in 1952, he married Virginia Schomig from Lemont, IL.

Following his active duty Henry entered graduate school. During this period he received 7 National Foundation Grants from the Government and also honored with a Shell Oil Fellowship Grant. All these grants were for pursuing graduate degrees in Physics. After 24 years of active and reserve duty he retired with a rank of Commander. During his education periods and after receiving his degrees, he was a College professor of Physics and was associated with the Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, IL. He retired from teaching and the Laboratory work in 1987.
Shortly after retirement Henry and Virginia moved to Arkdale, WI. Henry spent numerous years volunteering by teaching the automobile driver safety course to those over 55 the AARP 55 and Alive course and also volunteered in nearby counties the AARP program, preparing and completing the Federal and State taxes for senior citizens and low income individuals. Henry and his wife, Virginia also traveled throughout Wisconsin teaching volunteers these two programs for Senior Citizens. Henry volunteered his services in these two AARP programs for 15 years.

Henry enjoyed fishing, traveling, reading, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Virginia and their three children: Edward (Lou) Krass of Clarksville, TN; Barbara Stewart of West Chicago, IL; and Nancy (Donny) Hadley also of West Chicago, IL. Henry is further survived by seven grandchildren: Bryan, Kelly, Kim, Dylan, Natalie, Cody, and Shelby; two Brothers, and two Sisters.

Henry was active in the Roche-a-Cri Lions, Arkdale Lake Association, National Education Association, Illinois Education Association, VFW and the Military Retired Officers Association.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22nd, 2011 at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Friendship, WI. Father James P. McNamee will officiate. Friends may call at Roseberrys Funeral Home, Friendship, WI on Friday, October 21st, from 4 to 7 p.m. and again on Saturday at St. Josephs Catholic Church from 12 Noon until the time of Mass.

Cremation will follow the tradition service, with interment at the East Arkdale Cemetery.
