Linda L. Gately, age 70 passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2012 (she was last seen in the company of her guardian angel aboard the heaven express upon which she had a reserved seat.)
She was born on June 9, 1941 in Chicago to Mary and Chester Howe. She attended Saint Matthias Grammar School and completed her studies at Amundsen High School in 1959.
Linda and Jim met in 1956 at Kreskes Five and Dime in Chicago while working part time in their after school jobs. Linda married her High School sweetheart on May 19th, 1962 at Notre Dame University. Of this beautiful union of almost 50 years, two sons were born: James T. and Arthur L.
Linda coined the phrase multi-tasking before we knew what it meant. She was a devoted wife, mother, confidant, legal secretary, and trusted advisor to all the children in the neighborhood. Known for her quick wit and desire to help others were her strongest assets.
While working numerous hours with her husband James in the Law firm they started in a garden apartment, she always found time to be the biggest cheerleader to her sons, volunteer at the church and at her children’s school.
Upon retiring Linda kept her zest for life and the desire to put smiles on peoples faces. She was very active in her church as well as numerous clubs such as the Easton Snowmobilers Club, HCE, PCCW and several quilting and embroidery clubs.
Although she immensely enjoyed all her endeavors, her favorite was being a grandmother.
Her motto was “quit complaining and get her done.”
Linda will be missed by her family. She leaves behind a loving husband James A., her two sons: James T. (Geri) Gately and Arthur L. (Julie) Gately; her precious grandchildren Ashley N., James A., Tiffany L., and Rachel E. Gately. She is further survived by sisters: Dorothy Howe and Nancy Scott; and brothers: Thomas (Joan) Howe and Richard (Barbara) Howe.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Chester Howe and brother, Michael; and aunt, Mae Howe.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 11th, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Father James P. McNamee will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Leos Catholic Cemetery, Friendship, Wisconsin.
Visitation will be held for Linda at St. Josephs Catholic Church on Friday, February 10th, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be held Friday even at 8:30 p.m. and a Bible Vigil will then follow at 8:45 p.m.. Friends may also call at the Church on Saturday, February 11th, from 12:30 p.m. until the time of Mass.
Memorials in Linda’s memory may be directed to the St. Josephs Church Building Fund or Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, Rochester, MN.
We were very sorry to hear of Linda’s passing.
We remember all the fun times at Our Lady of Lourdes and think you all of you when we drive to the Jewel and pass the house on Damen. My dad Robert enjoyed being in the men’s club with Jim. How fitting that Linda’s service is on the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. The Robert McBride Family -OLL
