Grace L. Stormoen

Grace L. Stormoen, aged 84, passed away peacefully at Azura Memory Care Facility in Stoughton, Wisconsin, on November 12, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. She spent the last year of her life at Azura, where she was cared for by a kind and loving staff.

Born March 24, 1928 in Bassett, Iowa, she was one of fourteen children born to Clara and Joseph Brooks. As a teenager, her family moved to Wisconsin, where she met her future husband, Orin G. Stormoen, whom she married on December 30, 1949. They bought a home in Arkdale in 1950, where they raised seven children and resided until 2009, when both she and Orin moved to care facilities. Perhaps because Grace was unable to attend high school herself, she made sure that all of her children received an education, a value passed on to her grandchildren, all of whom have attended college. She also passed on to her children her strong work ethic and self-respect, even in modest circumstances.

Grace worked hard all of her life, first as a daughter, then as a wage-earner and mother. Among her places of employment were the Badger Army Ammunition Plant and Castle Rock Container, from which she retired in 1987. She was recognized by her supervisors and co-workers as a dedicated employee who always gave her best effort. Among the many activities she enjoyed and at which she excelled over the course of her life were baking (her pies were fabulous), yodeling, gardening, bowling, pitching horseshoes, ceramics, canning, dancing, and playing dominoes. She traveled whenever she had the opportunity, including trips to California, Iowa, South Dakota, the Grand Old Opry in Tennessee, Door County, and Washington, D.C. She was a member of the Arkdale Lutheran Church, the Arkdale Community Club, and the V.F.W. Women’s Auxiliary.

Grace is survived by her husband Orin, her siblings Daisy Boggess and Lester Brooks, her children Donna Leonardi (Dan), Doris Stormoen (Leslie Schwalm), Allen Stormoen, Dennis Stormoen, Carol Brogan (Ed), Dale Stormoen (Michelle), and Teresa Wildeck (Steve); her fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and ten siblings. Grace will be dearly missed.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2012. Visitation will be from 12:00 Noon until the time of service at Roseberry’s Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Grace’s name may be made to Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 E. Cheryl Pkwy., Madison, WI 53711.

  5. Kay Olson-Martz says:

What can I say to all of you that you will not have already heard? Your mother was a very dear person and your father just as special. When I see some of you I know that they passed those fine qualities down to their children. I miss seeing the flowers in the yard as we would come around the corner in Arkdale. Just like the star, if we came in from the west and saw the flowers we knew we were home. And when coming from the south and saw the Star on the Mound we knew we were home. I am unable to make it to the service today for your mother but know that I am thinking of all of you. Give your father a special kiss and hug from me. I have many special memories, as I am sure you all have. Keep them close, talk of your mother often and pass her legacy down to the generations to come. May you all find comfort in knowing that so many will be thinking and sending a special prayer for your mother and all of you. The Great Spirit above with our Heavenly Father will hold you all and give you comfort, as they have welcomed your mother Home. My deepest Sympathy, and I wish you all enough………Kay

  9. Charlene Jensen says:

Grace was a sweet quiet lady who, with Orin, raised a great bunch of kids. I’m glad I had opportunity to work with some of you who were my kids ages, and to be involved in Rudy and Orin’s many horseshoe experiences. I got to visit with Grace at some of these. Your memories should all be good ones of being brought up in a great small town by caring parents. God bless your entire family.
