Putz Griese, age 85, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 15, 2012.
Putz was born to Emil and Marcia (Stowell) Griese in Adams on January 3, 1927. He married Carla Jensen on August 22, 1948, who survives, as well as their six children: Karen (Dan) Graff, Glenn (Gigi) Griese, Lauren Griese (Debi Wehby), Wanda Abfall (Ron Dehmlow), Dennis (Amy) Griese, and Kris (Curt) Cvikota; 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Jefferson of Friendship, and many nieces and nephews.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and served in the Pacific on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. Putz worked as a conductor-brakeman for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad for 42 years. He enjoyed hunting, building and fixing things, his black Labradors, going to old car shows with his 1939 Mercury Coupe, gardening, and time with family at the “Shack.” Putz was a member of the VFW and the Chicago-Northwestern Veterans Association.
The family is holding a private memorial service, assisted by Roseberry’s Funeral Home. The family would like to thank the staff of Villa Pines Living Center for the loving care they gave to Putz in his last months.
Carla & the Griese family,
I am so very sorry to hear of Burton’s passing. I still remember living next door to you back in 1985 before we moved to Rochester, MN. Whenever I came back to visit my own father I would try to stop in to say hello. You will be missed.

My condolences to the Griese family. I have fond memories of our families spending time together – especially when Putz and my dad would start telling stories. They could really get things going and make everyone laugh. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Carla & Family, Our deepest sympathies to you at this time. We will remember the good times we had
out at the shack.
We send our love! Many thanks to your family and the joys that Carla and “Putz” brought to each person they met…I am remembering out at the shack the hot peppers that we fooled Joe into trying:).
Our deepest sympathy to the Griese family, and a very generous Thank You for all that Putz taught me while we worked together on the C&NW.
Dennis and Family, very sorry to hear of the loss of your Dad, you will sure miss him but he will always be with you, awesome picture of him with the USS Lexington hat on, he is a member of the Greatest Generation, everyone of us should be thankful that there were men like him who answered the call in World War II, not only did they defeat Japan in the Pacific but had the Nazis surrendering, begging for mercy in May of 1945, then they came home and built the greatest country in the world! Thank you to the Greatest Generation and Mr. Griese, may he rest in peace! Our prayers are with his family.
My sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the entire family..knowing the entire family in so many special ways, it is very difficult to share just One special thought. Each of you have been special over the years, each in your
own way. It is with thoughtful kindness that I now share in your loss and cherish the memories that I have made with the entire family. Irene Rathermel
