A Celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Friendship, Wisconsin. Bishop John Barrett will officiate. Interment will be at the Monroe Center Cemetery, Town of Monroe, Adams County, Wisconsin. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Roseberry’s Funeral Home and again at the church from 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday preceding the funeral service.
LaVaun was born in Centerville, Utah on January 5, 1927 as the youngest daughter of Clifford and Hattie (Coombs) Smith. She graduated from Saint Mark’s Nursing School in Salt Lake City, Utah, with part of her nursing education being done in downtown Chicago. As a nurse in the winter of 1951-1952 she went to Phoenix, Arizona with her sister, Marion where she met her husband (who was from Arkdale, Wisconsin and who was wintering in Phoenix.)
LaVaun and Forrest Jefferson were married in her parents home in Centerville, Utah on March 29, 1952. After marriage they made their home in Monroe Township, Wisconsin, where they raised their children. LaVaun was very active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was active in the local Ladies Aide, PTA, and Homemakers. LaVaun and Forrest were missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for one year in the Nashville, Tennessee area.
LaVaun is preceded in death by her husband, Forrest (2003); her parents Hattie and Clifford Smith, her sisters Lucille Fletcher, Louise and Marion Smith, as well as her sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws.
Her survivors include her sons Scott (Joyce) Jefferson of Salt Lake City, Utah; Mark (Carolyn) Jefferson of Arkdale; and Michael Jefferson of Adams; Her daughters Ann (John) Schneider of Orlando, Florida; Carol (Sidney) Hendricks of Centerville, Utah; Ellen (Douglas) Oba of Marshfield; Toni (Richard) Koziol of Arkdale; Eve (John) Leonard of Portland, Oregon; 35 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; sister-in-law June Coultas of Rib Lake; brother-in-law Jack Jefferson and sister-in-law Jean Callahan of Arlee, Montana. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.
LaVaun asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to the Perpetual Education Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by calling (801) 422-4444.
