Alta Bertha Johnson, age 90 of Arkdale, Wisconsin peacefully passed away 27 hours after her husband Planthen, on February 21, 2004 at the Nursing Care Unit of Adams County Memorial Hospital.

The Reverend Ronald Hanson will officiate at the celebration of her life service which will be 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 26th, 2004. with burial in the East Arkdale Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.

Alta was born March 8, 1913 in Mauston, Wisconsin the daughter of Ida (Olson) and Leonard Holm, she married Planthen Johnson on June 15, 1935 in Arkdale, WI. They are now together on their journey to eternal life.

She graduated from Adams-Friendship High School in 1931, and Steven Point Teachers College. She started her teaching career in Adams County in a one room school house and retired from Roche-A-Cri Grade School in 1975. She loved to meet and visit with her former students.

Alta was a lifelong resident of Arkdale, as well as a life time member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a Sunday school teacher, member of the church choir, altar guild, ladies aid circle, quilting, and historical committee, Strongs Prairie Community Club and retired teachers association. She loved to cook and bake, also working in her garden and flower beds. Family and friends came first in her life.

She will be sadly missed by his daughters Myrna (Joe) Baumel of Arkdale and Donna (Edgar) Heiser of Wisconsin Rapids; grandchildren Rhonda (Baumel) D’Aigle, of Wasilla Alaska, Mark Baumel of Necedah, Lori (Baumel) Barrett of Dellwood. Also nine great grandchildren, Margaret, Markie, Mitchell D’Aigle of Alaska, Sara, Tim, Steve Baumel of Adams, Tanner, Mikaela Barrett of Dellwood, and Ariel Baumel of Necedah. Two brothers Harold (Noma) Holm, Arkdale, Leon (Evelyn) Holm, California, and a sister, Verna Chilewski of Adams as well as many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Planthen, her parents and a brother Omer Holm.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.

Planthen Melvin Johnson age 92 of Arkdale passed away peacefully on Friday, February 20, 2004 t the Nursing Care Unit of Adams County Memorial Hospital

Planthen was born September 14, 1911 in the Town of Strongs Prairie, Adams County the son of Billie and Josephine (Hansen) Johnson. He married Alta Holm on June 15, 1935 in Arkdale. He was a life long resident of Arkdale, attended the Sweet School and Adams Friendship High School. He was a carpenter, worked summers in the fire tower, but his main occupation was meat cutter. He worked for L. Picus Store in Friendship and then Huber’s General Store in Nekoosa retiring in 1975. He loved gardening, doing wood projects, and visiting with friends and relatives at home on his porch in Arkdale.

Planthen was a life time member of the Arkdale Trinity Lutheran Church; he served on the church council, historical committee, and was a member of the choir. He served as a member of the Town of Strongs Prairie board as well a member of the Adams County Board serving mainly on the Highway and Parks Committee.  Planthen was also proud to be a charter member of the Roche-A-Cri Lions.

He will be sadly missed by his daughters Myrna (Joe) Baumel of Arkdale and Donna (Edgar) Heiser of Wisconsin Rapids; grandchildren Rhonda (Baumel) D’Aigle, of Wasilla Alaska, Mark Baumel of Necedah, Lori (Baumel) Barrett of Dellwood. Also nine great grandchildren, Margaret, Markie, Mitchell D’Aigle of Alaska, Sara, Tim, Steve Baumel of Adams, Tanner, Mikaela Barrett of Dellwood, and Ariel Baumel of Necedah. He is also, survived by his sister Myrtle Wald of Eau Claire, as well as many other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
