Frances
E. Day, age 91, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin died December
17, 2005 at the Riverview Manor in Wisconsin Rapids,
Wisconsin.Funeral services
will be 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 23, 2005 at the
First Congregational Church in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin
following visitation at 10 a.m.. The Rev. Paul and Wanda Veldman will officiate. Entombment will be at the Forest
Hill Mausoleum, Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.
Visitation will be at Roseberry's
Funeral Home in Friendship on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m.
Wisconsin Rapids Rainbow Chapter # 87 O.E.S is planning a
memorial service for Frances, probably in March.
Frances was born at home in the Town
of Springville, Adams County, Wisconsin to Ned Waterman Cook
and Jane Elizabeth Stowe Cook on November 15, 1914,
delivered by both her grandmothers Lillian Thwing Stowe and
Lillie Adella Waterman Cook. Frances graduated from Kilbourn
High School (Wisconsin Dells) in 1931 at age 16, and entered
the one-year rural certificate program at the state
teacher’s college in Stevens Point. Frances began teaching
at Plainville School in the fall of 1932 at the age of 17.
Then Frances taught at Badger Valley for 3 years. Frances
married Lloyd D. Day on June 18, 1938 in Wisconsin Dells,
Wisconsin.
Frances went back to
work in the fall of 1942, teaching 5 children at Cold Water
Canyon School. After about a month, the school board came
and asked her to move to Dell Prairie School on the
following Monday and she stayed there until 1946. Frances
and Lloyd moved to Friendship, Wisconsin in the summer of
1946, where Frances taught at Friendship Grade School.
Frances and Lloyd
moved to Wisconsin Rapids in Sept. of 1957, Frances was a
Wood County supervising teacher until 1962, when she became
the elementary supervisor for City of Wisconsin Rapids
schools. Frances retired from the Wisconsin Rapids Schools
in 1980. Frances and Lloyd celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary on June 18, 1988. Lloyd died suddenly on
August 8, 1996. Frances went on alone in her beloved home
until a fall in 2000 led her to move to Riverview Manor.
Frances was very active in the
communities where she lived. She was a current member and
past president of A.A.U.W. (American Association of
University Women); the Girl Scouts from 1950-1957; past
president of the Adams County Teachers Association, current
member and past president of the Wis. Rapids Area Retired
Educators; Curriculum Committee of Wisconsin Department of
Public Instruction; WASCD Wis. Association for Supervision
and Curriculum Development; Eastern Star (O.E.S.) – member
of Quincy Chapter 71, Friendship, then of Rainbow Chapter,
Wis. Rapids; member and past president of the Shriner's
Auxiliary; president and treasurer of the Women's
Fellowship; chair of the Mayfair Circle; member of the
Friends of the Library, Wis. Rapids; president and secretary
of the Business & Professional Women; past president of the
Delta Kappa Gamma; Riverview Hospital Auxiliary (it’s
Lifeline Program , past Coordinator of the hospital’s Yellow
Brick Road program, and it’s Craft group); past president of
the Reading Council; and the First Congregational Church of
Wisconsin Rapids.
Frances was preceded in death by her
parents; husband Lloyd – 1988; sisters, Laurice M. Heitman
and Edith Vera Cook; and Brothers Raymond P. Cook and Robert
L. Cook.
