Teresa Marie Wallendal, 17, of Friendship, Wisconsin passed away peacefully on Monday, March 14, 2005 at UW Children’s Hospital surrounded by those who love and admire her courage and spirit.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 18th, 2005 at the Arkdale Trinity Lutheran in Arkdale. Rev. Steve Kaszar will officiate. Cremation will follow the service.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Adams Friendship High School Gymnasium.

Teresa was born September 1, 1987 in Friendship, Wisconsin, to Andrew and Paula Wallendal.

She was always an energetic child, finding great pleasure in keeping up with her sisters Emily and Laura. At the age of 6, she was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent a Bone Marrow Transplant. Though difficult at times, she always kept a positive attitude in dealing with medical obstacles.

Life then became a special gift to enjoy for her. She loved hiking, canoeing, camping, meeting new people and just hanging out with friends. One of her favorite experiences was participating in a canoeing camp in northern Canada for 3 weeks. She said the best part was being out in the wilderness away from civilization and at night looking up at the endless array of stars. She enjoyed competing in volleyball, playing her saxophone in middle school and high school bands and taking a leadership role in the local FFA.

In June of 2003, her leukemia relapsed and the obstacles began again. She faced treatment again with courage and determination and was able to participate in the High School Band trip to Florida, FFA state convention, FFA leadership conference in Washington D.C., and a trip to Silver Lining Ranch in Aspen, CO with other cancer survivors.

In August, she was diagnosed with chronic graft vs host disease as a result of her leukemia treatment. Though her health was compromised and she was unable to attend school, she was very honored to be chosen Homecoming Queen this fall by her classmates at school.

We are eternally grateful for the loving care Teresa received from all the staff at UW Children’s Hospital , her classmates, family, community, and everyone who sent their positive thoughts, prayers, hugs, etc. during the last few months as Teresa fought her battles.

She leaves behind her parents, sisters Emily (attending school in Ashland, WI) and Laura (attending school in Boston, MA), maternal grandfather John Gustafson of Belvidere, IL, paternal grandmother Claire Wallendal of Friendship, WI.

Aunts and Uncles, John and Monica Wallendal of Adams, WI, Robert and Carol Stodola of Grand Marsh, WI and Gary and Meg Gustafson of Jacksonville, OR.

Cousins, Raechel and Eric Wallendal, Diane and Cathryn Stodola, Garrett, Ben and Catherine Gustafson.

She will be welcomed in heaven by her maternal grandmother Lois Gustafson, paternal grandfather Peter Wallendal and cousin Brian Wallendal.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to American Family Children's Hospital Building Fund.
