Sidney J. Oakes, age 77, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin died Monday, September 11, 2006 at his home.

Memorial services will be 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 14, 2006 at the Roseberry's Funeral Home in Friendship, Wisconsin. Rev. Jon Meyer will officiate. Military rites will be offered at the funeral home by the Adams VFW Post #6279; the Adams American Legion Red Cloud Post #250; and the Grand Marsh American Legion Snyder-Richardson Post #273.

Interment will be at the Olin Cemetery, Springville Township, Adams County, Wisconsin at a later date.

Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. until the 3:00 p.m. service on Thursday at Roseberry's Funeral Home.

Sidney was born September 19, 1928 in Brainerd, Minnesota to Lyle E. and Irene F. (Colby) Oakes. He graduated from Twin Valley Elementary (Town of Springville) and the Adams-Friendship High School in 1946. Sidney married Rose E. Kleist on June 24, 1950 in Portage, Wisconsin. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the Army from October of 1950 to July of 1952. Sidney received the purple heart. Sidney worked for Wisconsin Power & Light Company for 37 � years, retiring in October of 1990.

Sidney enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, gardening, wood carving, and spending time with his family.

Sidney was a member of Electrical Workers Union Local 965, the Montello Volunteer Fire Dept. for 20 years, the Montello American Legion Wieske Ferrell Post #351 since 1968, Montello Rotary Club (was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship Award in 1988); and the Montello Chamber of Commerce (awarded the Distinguished Citizen Award in 1973). He was a member of St. John�s Ev. Lutheran Church in Montello from 1968 to 1990 and St. Paul�s Ev. Lutheran Church in Mauston from 1990 to the present.

Sidney was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Edwin and James Oakes; and nephew Roger Oakes.

Son: Michael J. (Mary K.) Oakes of Montello, Wisconsin

Son: Richard L. (Mary D.) Oakes of Montello, Wisconsin

Daughter: Kathy L. (Charlie) Zigler of Chicago, Illinois

Grandchildren: 9

Great-Grandchildren: 3

Brother: Edward W. (Lila) Oakes of Friendship, Wisconsin

Sister-in-law: Gertrude Oakes of Janesville, Wisconsin

Brother-in-law: Howard Kleist of River Grove, Illinois

Sister-in-law: Joan Kleist of Tomahawk, Wisconsin

Further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
