Lawrence
Clifford Billings, age 88, of Friendship, Wisconsin died
December 7, 2008 at his home. Funeral services will be
11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at the Zion
Lutheran Church in Big Flats, Wisconsin. Rev. Karyn D.
Bodenschatz will officiate. Interment will be at the Mt.
Repose Cemetery, Friendship, Wisconsin.
Visitation will be at Roseberry's Funeral Home on Friday,
December 12th, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday
at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Lawrence was born November 10, 1920 in Friendship,
Wisconsin to George Willard and Mary Ellen (Madsen)
Billings. He attended the Cottonville Grade School and
graduated from Adams-Friendship High School in 1939. He
enjoyed playing football, and was in his senior class play.
Lawrence attended Agriculture Short Course at the University
of Wisconsin, Madison following high school. He married
Wilma Ferne Kurth on June 5, 1948 in White Creek
Congregational Church. Lawrence was the 3rd
generation dairy farmer on the family farm and raised
registered Holsteins. He also worked at the Nekoosa Paper
Mill for twenty years until his retirement. Lawrence and
Wilma built a new home the year of his retirement, replacing
the original Cotton house.
Throughout his entire life, Lawrence loved the outdoors.
He had a passion for trapping, hunting, and fishing,
enjoying fishing in Canada for many years. Lawrence was an
avid reader and loved to travel. He and Wilma took several
trips after his retirement, including trips to Alaska and
Churchill, Manitoba, Canada to see polar bears.
Lawrence was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he
was very involved in building the fellowship hall addition.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Zion
Lutheran Church of Big Flats or the American Cancer Society.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, George
Willard and Mary Ellen Billings; sister, Marian Lueders;
brother, Norman Billings; and sister, Hannah Mallon.
