Harold (Lloyd) was born on January 5, 1920 in the
settlement of Indian Creek outside Muscoda, WI. His parents,
Le Roy and Bessie (Stetler) Landon owned the combination
residence/cheese factory. They lived here with their
children, Clarence Paul, Leslie Leo, Harold Lloyd and Zola
Lucille until 1924 when the family moved to Rudolph, WI
where they purchased and operated a cheese factory, known as
the Carson Cheese Factory. The children received their
education in the Rudolph Schools and also worked in the
cheese factory. When Lloyd was 16 years old the family moved
north to operate the cheese factory at Radisson, WI. There
Lloyd drove 2 milk routes as well as working in the factory.
In 1940 the family left cheese making and moved to Wisconsin
Rapids where Lloyd was employed as a truck driver. In 1942
the Tuttle Creamery in Friendship was in need of cheese
makers for an addition to their butter-making operation.
Lloyd and his father took the positions and the family moved
to Friendship, renting the Gunning House. They lived there
until the house was purchased by Robert and Edmond Roseberry
for use as a funeral home.
In 1944 Lloyd entered the U.S Navy. He served most of his
time in the European, African, Mid-Eastern and Asiatic
Pacific areas. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as
Fireman 1/C. His employment varied after that, working with
the Adams County Highway Department, Ashworth Brothers
Lumber and Ice Making, Wisconsin Rapids trucking companies
during the construction of the Castle Rock and Petenwell
Dams, Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company (in the car
maintenance and repair division), Ellis Stone Construction
Company (while constructing Adams County Memorial Hospital),
and custodian/bus driver for Adams County Area Schools for
22 years.
On October 29, 1949 he married Elsie Lysy in the
Friendship Congregational Church. They lived in Friendship
and one child, Leslie Harold Landon, was born to them. In
1960 the Landon family opened and operated a bicycle shop
from their home and garage in Friendship. Later, the
business grew and they purchased property next to their home
and built Landons Bicycle Shop. Elsie and Lloyd operated
this shop for 39 years, closing it in 1999 due to health
concerns.
Lloyd enjoyed ice fishing, gardening, bicycle riding and
cutting wood.
On January 5, 2003, Lloyds 83rd birthday, he
and his wife moved to rural Friendship to property which had
been in the family for many years.
There they enjoyed "country living" and being close to
family. On July 19, 2004 when his health was failing, he
entered Villa Pines Living Center, Friendship, WI.
Lloyd was a member of the Friendship Congregational Bible
Church, the Gideons International, VFW Post #6279 and the
Western Fraternal Life Association.
