Alsace Lorraine Hamman, age 89, of Grand Marsh, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2014 at her home.

She was born on April 23, 1924 in Grand Marsh, Wisconsin, the daughter of Frank and Modjeska (Mink) Morgan. Alsace or Lorraine as she was called throughout her life was named after the town Alsace Lorraine located in France which her father had encountered while serving in WWI.

As a child, Lorraine lived in rural Grand Marsh. She attended the Grand Marsh Grade School through the 8th grade and upon graduation began her working life. Lorraine worked at various jobs early in her life but eventually began working in restaurants which lead to a long career in cooking. She cooked at restaurants in Wisconsin Dells as well as in the Sportsman Bar in Grand Marsh and Patrick’s Lake Resort outside of Grand Marsh. In 1972 she began cooking at the Grand Marsh Grade School, a job that she had once had in the 1950’s. She was in this position until her retirement.

Lorraine married Leonard H. Hamman on April 23, 1959. Sons Leonard W. (Len) and Tracy were born in 1960 and 1961. The birth of Tracy prompted a move from Wisconsin Dells to Grand Marsh where the family was raised and Lorraine lived until her passing.

Husband Leonard passed away in November of 1971 leaving Lorraine to raise their 2 sons into adulthood. She worked hard to give her son’s opportunities to participate in various activities such as Cub Scouts, 4-H, athletics, hunting, etc. as they were growing up in addition to providing guidance and a close-knit home life.

Lorraine was well-known for her cooking and baking abilities. She enjoyed being in the kitchen and in addition to traditional dishes, she was excellent at preparing wild game. Her hobbies included crocheting, embroidering, and gardening.

Throughout her life Lorraine was a member of various organizations including the United Church of Christ, Shadow Sisters, 4-H, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Grand Marsh Development. She was willing to lend a helping hand when it was needed in the community.

Lorraine was a loving, caring Mother, Sister, Grandmother, and Aunt. She loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephew, nieces, and great nephews and nieces. She had many relatives and friends and enjoyed their company. Lorraine lived a long life and will be greatly missed.

The family wishes to thank all of Lorraine’s relatives and friends for being an important part of her life.

She is survived by her sons: Len (Paula) Hamman of Medford and Tracy (friend Cindy) Hamman of Grand Marsh;
her sister- in- law: Shirley Morgan of Milwaukee; her daughter in law: Stacey Hamman of Adams; her granddaughters: Amber Hamman of Madison and Sarah (Seth) Hamman Hamland of Medford; her grandsons: Travis Hamman of Medford, Logan Hamman of Mankato, MN, and Seth Hamman of Couer d’ Alene, ID; her nephew: Wayne (Renee) Morgan, Jr of Oshkosh; her nieces: Kandi (James) Morgan Phelps of Milwaukee and Michaela (Charles) McNeil of Milwaukee; her great-grandsons: Angus and Paxton Hamland and great-granddaughter Aubrey Hamman. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her younger brother Wayne A. Morgan, Sr. who passed away unexpectedly this past September.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at the Grand Marsh United Church of Christ in Grand Marsh, Wisconsin. Pastor Stephen Bowie will officiate. Interment will be at the Easton Cemetery.

Friends may call on Wednesday at Roseberry’s Funeral Home from 5 – 7 p.m. and again on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

    Tracy,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It is always hard to lose a parent even when you know that it is inevitable. I was so happy to read that your mom got her wish to stay in her home. You did a great job making that possible for her. She is now free of all those earthly limitations. As hard as it sounds, it is now time to rejoice and remember all the great times you all shared while she was here on earth. My prayers are with you during this time of transition.

    Tracy and Len,
I will always remember the good home cooked meals we had at the Grand Marsh School. I knew most of your family and have many fond memories. I hope she will be neighbors to my mom and dad, and grandma and grandpa K. in heaven. Soon all of that generation will be looking down and seeing what a great job they did raising us!! I was happy to lend a hand or whatever I could to help you out. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the family.

Tracy and Lenny, Sorry to hear of your moms passing. She was a great Lady and will be missed by all who knew her. But as mom said Her and my dad can now continue on with their conversations and dad can have his special treats again. Keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

  14. Bev Ward says:

Tracy – Will keep you in my prayers and in my heart. Ted would come home and tell me about the conversations he shared with your Mom at work and also enjoyed visiting her at her home after she retired. Was always bragging about the goodies she would bring him and he always ate them before he came home so he didn’t have to share them. They had some great conversations. Now they can continue them and Ted can enjoy her cooking

  15. Loren Lecy and Peggy Henriksen says:

May Lorraine rest in peace. I’m so happy she received her wish to remain at home. Hold her memories close. So sorry on your loss

  16. Dean and Barb Morgan says:

We will miss you greatly, Lorraine. You were one that encouraged me to write the history of Grand Marsh. You and Dean had the faith in me I didn’t. I missed our 2-3 times a week visits after Dean got sick. You always will hold a special place in my heart. To Len and Tracy and families…you are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Your Mom is free from pain and probably cooking up a storm in Heaven. I hope they are all hungry for the feasts she prepares. Our love, Barb and Dean
