Betty Jefferson
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Interment will be at the Mt. Repose Cemetery, Friendship, Wisconsin.
Betty was born August 7, 1924 in Adams, Wisconsin to Emil and Marcia (Stowell) Griese. She married Wayne Jefferson in November of 1944 at the Little Brown Church in Iowa. They made their home in Friendship on the Jefferson family farm where they raised ten children. Betty was the Town of Adams Clerk for 48 years, retiring in 2001.
Betty enjoyed quilting, baking, taking care of her dogs, shooting pigeons with her .22, and driving her Allis-Chambers 17 tractor.
Betty was a member of the Adams County Historical Society, Happy Hour Homemakers, Mt. Repose Cemetery Association,

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Marcia Griese; husband, Wayne Jefferson; and brother, Putz Griese.

Daughter: Carla (Cary) Utterberg of Golden Valley, Minnesota
Grandchildren: Brian, Katey, Cecila, Erik, Justin, Jessica, Alicia, Alison, Max, and Sam
Great-Grandchildren: 10

Oh the memories of those wonderful smells in your mom’s kitchen and that huge pile of bread dough and those wonderful rolls. She was a amazing lady and tough She taught my mom how to sew. How she put up with all of us playing in the hay mound and thru the house, etc. The world has lost a wonderful lady but God has gained a great angel. From the Wood family to all of you our deepest sympathy in the loss of your mother. Jesus said come unto me all you that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.

Joyce, I was so sorry to hear about your Mother. You and your family have my deepest sympathy. It won’t be the same at the Historical Society events without her.

Dave and your Dad Wayne shared time together on county ASCS board. There must be stacks of memories along with piles of her many beautiful quilts! Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Betty was a dedicated community volunteer. Her faithful service to the Adams County Fair and 4-H were much appreciated. Thank you all for sharing your mother with us!

Any time I visited your house she always had freshly baked cookies, and a quilt going. It’s so great to read about the grand kids and 10 great grand kids. As great a mother as she was, she must have been an awesome grandmother! Our family sends love to you all.

Very sorry to hear of Betty’s passing. I will always remember how helpful she was to me when I first became County Clerk. The laughs we shared during the years of her being Clerk and after she retired. All good memories of a great person. You are in my thoughts and Prayers.
Joyce, I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your mom. She was such a great lady – hard working, great mother and an asset to our small community. I am glad I was able to visit with her when I was out to the house to vote! We shared the same birthday and we were both married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa!! Carla and Family – So sorry to hear the news about your Mom. I was in Friendship until yesterday. When I heard the news I was compelled to drive by the farm and say a prayer for Betty. I reflected back on the many happy memories shared with you, your parents, and siblings on the farm. I can still recite all of your brothers and sisters names in order which was a requirement of your Dad’s to be allowed into the house. Peace be with you all.

My deepest sympathy. Losing a loved one is so hard but just remember all the Happy Memories. She always made me laugh or smile when she came to the clinc with her Harley fanny pack! My thoughts and prayers to all of you.
No words can express how sad I feel right now. Betty was such a support when I was town treasurer with her as town clerk for 20 years. We worked so well together and I enjoyed every minute learning from her. She also was a great baker and quilter. The dairy show at the fair wasn’t complete with out Betty clerking the show. She will be missed. Our sympathy to her whole family.

I have many fun memories of hanging out at the Jefferson’s home back in the day. My sincere condolences to Tom, Bruce, Carla, and all of the Jefferson family.

We are so saddened to hear of Betty’s passing. After the delightful visit we had with her at the McGowan House Xmas party earlier this month, we had thought she was improving. So many events in our county just won’t be the same without her. We have all lost a dear lady and “quilter extraordinaire”!

Joyce and family — So sorry to hear Betty passed away. We enjoyed a nice visit at the December 11th Historical Society open house. Betty was my mentor when I started as a town clerk over 40 years ago. She was always ready and willing to help me when I called her. She will be greatly missed for her pleasant demeanor and encouraging words whenever I spoke with her.
