David Roy Barnes

David Roy Barnes, age 22, of Oshkosh/Adams-Friendship, died unexpectedly due to complications from cancer treatments on Sunday, October 7, 2007 in Oshkosh, WI.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 11th, 2007 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adams, Wisconsin. Rev. John Krebs will officiate. Burial will follow at the South Arkdale Cemetery.

Friends may call at Roseberrys Funeral Home & Crematory on Wednesday, October 10th, from 4 to 8 p.m. and at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Thursday, October 11th, from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

David was born February 20, 1985 to Herb and Deb (Olson) Barnes in Friendship, WI.

David resided in Oshkosh, attending his 5th year at the University of Wisconsin. Influenced by many memorable experiences and great teachers, David continued in his years long, yet unwavering desire to be a high school English teacher. David loved to read and often shared of his desire to bring other young people to love it as much. An early elementary teacher described David as a kid that "likes to have fun, but he knew when it was time to get down to business." An apt observation yet today.

David enjoyed baseball all of his brief life. With hopes of playing for his beloved Atlanta Braves, he began by throwing his ball on the roof of his home for hours. This gave his mom the benefit of knowing exactly where he was by the evident thump echoing throughout the house. The years of Little League showed a focused player emerging, and continued with his position behind the plate of his Adams-Friendship team.

David had many friends in his hometown of Adams-Friendship as well as his new home in Oshkosh. He had worked at several AF stores, including Ace, AF IGA, and as a young boy working with his Mom and Dad at the hardware store. David spent time with the Adams County Parks Department working at the Castle Rock Park, and also worked for the Adams County Highway Dept and later Fenners Excavating. He spent some time off from classes working with is brother Dan, with Tweet-Garot Mechanical, to assist with the financing his education, gaining great respect and admiration for hard, long hours, and for his brother. While in Oshkosh he worked in the yards of the Oshkosh FleetFarm.

When not working or studying, David was a contemplative, quiet young man, and spent many hours on the deck in discussion with his family and friends, giving brief glimpse to the depth of his insight and thoughtfulness. He had a vast collection of music and it showed his eclectic taste ranging from Beethoven to Clapton to Vaughan.

David was diagnosed with cancer in January of 2006. Surgical treatment seemed to leave David cancer free until a follow-up appointment in May of 2007 revealed a developing spot in his left lung. A later scan showed it to be growing. Surgical removal and a succession of chemo therapy sessions gave every indication that David would win. Something went wrong. He fought to the end and remained as he would state on the phone, "Im fine, just a little tired, Mom." In the end he did win his battle by entering glory.

The familys hope is that David will be remembered for his kindness, tender heart and that big beautiful smile.

He is survived by parents, Herb and Deb Barnes of Friendship, brother Dan (Amanda) and nieces Grace and Sydney ; brother Paul; grandfather Roy and Aunt Cathy, Uncle Ron (Peggy) all of Friendship. Aunt Joyce Elliot, Aunt Eileen Krueger, nieces Grace and Sydney and many great aunts and uncles and cousins. Many friends from the Adams-Friendship area and the Oshkosh area.

He was preceded in death by his Grandparents Ralph and Dorothy Olson, and Grandmother Ethel Barnes, and Uncle Edwin Olson.

A Scholarship Fund will be set up in Davids memory for the Adams-Friendship High School, or memorials can be given to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Adams, Wisconsin.
