Lt. Edward Thomas

Edward L. Thomas, a distinguished individual who touched the lives of many, peacefully passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at the age of 95. Edward, formerly of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, spent his final days surrounded by his loved ones at his daughter’s home in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.

Private family memorial services will be held at a later date to honor and celebrate Edward’s remarkable life.

Edward was born on October 13, 1927, in Jackson, Michigan, as the second of three children to Ernest and Ione (Sisson) Thomas. His journey began with a strong work ethic, as he took on his first job at the age of 9, working at a summer camp. As a young man, he worked alongside his father on the railroad in Michigan and later served as a pinsetter at a local bowling alley.

During World War II, Edward bravely served in the Coast Guard, dedicating himself to the defense of his country. Following the war, he settled in Milwaukee and pursued his studies at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. It was there that he crossed paths with the love of his life, Dorothy. They embarked on a beautiful journey together, exchanging vows on June 3, 1951, and sharing an incredible 70 years of marriage.

Edward’s professional endeavors showcased his unwavering dedication and commitment. He worked at A.O. Smith for five years before joining the Milwaukee Fire Department, where he achieved the distinction of becoming the first Black fire department lieutenant in Wisconsin. Additionally, he served on the Wisconsin Statewide 911 committee, demonstrating his steadfast devotion to public service.

Beyond his professional achievements, Edward found joy in various hobbies and activities. He delighted in tending to his yard, expertly repairing small engines, and serving as the family’s go-to handyman. His creativity and resourcefulness extended to crafting kites and parachutes. Edward’s warm spirit and love for his family were further evident in his roles as a Little League coach and Cub Scout troop leader. He cherished spending time with his loved ones and was always willing to go above and beyond to support them.

Throughout his life, Edward remained an active member of the Milwaukee Professional Firefighters Union, contributing to the welfare of his fellow firefighters.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ione; his beloved wife, Dorothy; sister, Helen Simmons; and one grandchild. He leaves behind a profound legacy and will be deeply missed by his children: Edward L. (Katharine) Thomas Jr. of Leominster, MA; Jocelyn (Floyd) Johnson of Wisconsin Dells, WI; and Todd Thomas of Madison, WI. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and friends.

Edward always thought of others first, always attentive to their well-being.
