Dale Leon Toltzmann

Dale Leon Toltzmann

Dale Leon Toltzmann, 79, of Friendship, was welcomed into heaven on January 23rd, 2023, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born at his parents’ home in Manitowoc, WI on September 9, 1943. He was the sixth child of eight, and the third son of Earl (Smokey) and Anna (Sleger) Toltzmann. He was a 1961 graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School. He received degrees in mathematics and biology education from UW Oshkosh and started his teaching career at Adams-Friendship high school in 1968. Dale continued to teach there until his retirement in 2000. He received a Masters Degree with honors from UW Stevens Point, and became AF High School’s first computer science teacher, as well as the head of the math department.

In 1972, Dale met Shelia Wilson, a girl from Nekoosa, in the teachers’ lounge and she became the love of his life. They were married on July 13, 1974 and built a home together in rural Friendship. They were blessed with two amazing sons, Jason and Scott, and the four of them worked together to build a wonderful life. Dale shared his love for all things outdoors, hunting, fishing, trapping, camping, riflery, sturgeon Spearing and especially archery with them, and encouraged his sons and others to appreciate the beauty and bounty of nature. They took many fishing trips to Canada together and they developed lasting friendships with most of the people of Upsala, Ontario. In addition, Dale assisted and encouraged Jason and Scott’s participation in not only outdoor activities, but Cub Scouts, hunting, boating and snowmobile safety courses, as well as their school activities. Dale was a member of the Roche-A-Cri Bowman, Wisconsin Trappers’ Association and Wisconsin Bowhunters. He continued to be the most senior team Archer at our local club until this past November.

As a teacher, Dale was known for his ability to breakdown math concepts into funny processes that would help his students understand and remember them. But he was most known for the hunting and fishing stories that he would interject into his teaching lessons. He loved to tell jokes and stories to them, as well as to anyone, anywhere, who would listen. His love and zest for life was contagious and he developed countless life-long relationships with his colleagues and former students. He felt blessed to have 23 happy, healthy years of retirement, and continue to frequent flea markets, auctions, and garage sales. He loved to bargain, to buy and resell, and to collect. Organizing these collections will give his family many years of activity.

Dale was lovingly known as husband, father, grandpa, and friend, Mr. T., Gray Beard, Wild Dale and Walking Eagle, but will also be remembered for his clever sense of humor, kindness and willingness to help anyone. He was strong, sensitive, honest, and had deep religious beliefs. He will be missed by family and friends, but leaves a beautiful legacy of a happy, fun, caring man, and countless thousands of photos to document his extraordinary life.

Dale is survived by his wife of 48 years, Shelia, and their sons Jason and Scott (Heather) Toltzmann. His most proud moments were spent welcoming, teaching, and loving his two grandchildren, Cameron and Madelynn. In addition, Dale has two brothers, Richard (Joanne) and Bruce. Sisters include Nancy Vilhauer and Patty Kirchen, as well as 13 nieces and nephews, their children and grandchildren, and many wonderful friends. In-laws include, Rosemary (Razz) and Tref Sinette, Frank (Roberta) Wilson, and Colleen Wilson (Dan Huckins).

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, Frank and Lucille Wilson, his brother, Roy, and sisters Marlene Longmeyer and Jean Onasch. In addition are his brothers-in-law Fred Onasch, Jim Longmeyer, Mel Vilhauer, Jim Kirchen, and Charlie Wilcox, and an infant niece, and her brother Mark Toltzmann.

A Celebration of life will be 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at the Cedar Shack in Adams, Wisconsin. All Family, friends, and former students are invited.

The Toltzmann family would like to thank the Medical Team at Gunderson Moundview, and the doctors and staff of Marshfield Medical Center. In addition, we extend our gratitude to the many wonderful friends and family who have loved and supported Dale on his life’s journey. Your kindness will never be forgotten.

  1. Jeffrey Cila says:

Mr. Toltzmann was a truly good soul in my book. I carry many memories of his classroom presence. Etched in my psyche is his wild head of hair and beard…one day he reached into his desk draw and pulled out a brush. Thought for sure he was going to tame that “professor’s” mane, but No; he used that brush to remove the chalk dust from his clothes. He made Algebra fun and easy to understand. My heart goes out to Shelia, the entire family, and friends. An icon of my high school years. He made the world a much more enjoyable place. May God grant him peace, rest, and may his loved ones feel the comfort of the Holy Spirit whenever they think of him.

  2. Tom McKinley says:

Sorry to hear that Mr. Toltzsmann has passed away. He gets lots of credit for preparing me for college and a math orientated career. More importantly, he taught some great life lessons as well. I think he may be where I first heard the phrase, “Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can’t, you’re probably correct either way”. He was a great guy!
    My condolences to his family.

  3. Nancy Sorensen says:

I had the pleasure of having him as my Algebra & Geometry teacher at the beginning of his teaching career and my son was one of his last students before his retirement. He touched so many peoples lives and was such a good role model for the youth in this community. He will not be forgotten. May God give you strength to to bear the sorrow and peace & comfort to continue on thru life’s journey.

  13. Paul Tasch says:

I graduated in May 1992. [Dale] Mr. Toltzmann was my Algebra 1 teacher. Honestly & respectfully, I never was interested in Algebra, but he had a philosophically & quirky personality I related to for the most part. (Albeit, I was not interested in hunting & fishing…but sometimes we did not get around to taking tests-lol.)

The “only” (3) times I saw him since graduation was in 1994 when he & one of his sons (can’t remember which) came to our house in Big Flats (at the time) to look at and potentially buy my brother’s 89 Chevy S-10. Dale wasn’t impressed that his son wanted to buy it. When his son started to pull the truck forward, I remembered he ran over the tire jack. Dale’s facial expression was painted sarcastic & humorous simultaneously.

The 2nd time was in 2000 when I was a sub-custodain, in the spring, when he told me he was going to retire at the end of the school year. He “also” shared some “off the record” thoughts about life and his personal family life. No spoilers-lol! 😅 (Perhaps there should have been a movie-lol!)

The 3rd/last time was at Goodwill in Stevens Point. He didn’t recognize me. But after I explained, then he knew.

Life definitely is short. Took me 48 years to learn that lesson.

The irony is that Dale passed on my mom’s 73rd birthday. My mom passed on Jan 1, 2023 from cancer.

Helps when our family members (the ones we liked, anyways) expressed their wishes for us before passing. Perhaps “Mr. T” felt the same as my mom: “I [She] made peace with life, live your life how you want and I’m ready to go any time.”

Condolences and best wishes moving forward.

    Paul Tasch.

Thinking of you Sheila and the rest of the family. What stories Dale could tell. Algebra was not my favorite subject but I looked forward to the class every day because he always started us off with a happy story. Usually involved deer of course. May flights of Angels sing you to your rest. Tell them the one about the big buck that got away when you get upstairs. Robby

  23. Sandy Cardo Gorsuch says:

When I was a little girl I loved to sit and listen to the stories shared around our kitchen table after dark in the fall. Dale and others who bow hunted there would come in and spend what seemed to me like hours talking about what they saw in the woods, the one that got away, and many other tall tales. They never told me or my sisters to go to another room – we were welcome to hear everything they talked about. Dale seemed like a big grizzly bear to me. Later, when I got to high school I was blessed to have both Dale and Shelia as teachers and they were two of my favorites. I remember in my sophomore year I had geometry right after swimming class. My long, wet hair was a mess, as we never had enough time to change after swimming. I would sit in geometry class combing out my hair, with ice flying everywhere in the winter! He never complained about it. I am so glad this man was in this world. Many will miss him. Condolences to Shelia and all his loved ones.

DALE was that Special Guy you loved to hang out with. Tom Riphahn, John Riphahn and Me Jim “Doc” Von Eschen had a cabin (Garage) next to Dale & Sheila’s House. Every gun hunting season we were the “Tourists” coming up from Madison to hunt. After the day hunting, we would all get together and share our stories. After a few Beers the stories & B,S. got pretty funny. One was the time Dale shot 2 Deer with one shot making him a “Ledgen” to all of us. He loved to help us with all our difficult projects and tree stands with always having the right tools. One time I went across the road exploring and got lost but once I heard the car horn, I was able to find my way back thanks to Dale. He Then gave me a ball of string and said tie this to your front door before exploring. We always made it a point to go over and have a great visit Sheila once to see who shot “JR”.
We All will sure Miss DALE he was one in a million.

  67. Dan & Amanda Barnes says:

The poster on the front of his desk of a bald eagle saying “I am smiling” and writing “hamerfur” on the chalkboard only to explain to the person that asked “what’s a hamerfur” that it was what you used to pound nails. If you asked him where he caught something or saw something he’d say “you can’t get there from here”. When I shot bow at the bow club he once told me “maybe you should stick to shooting marbles”. Dale had much to offer and teach.

  68. Sharon Baldwin says:

My condolences for the loss of your dear husband, father, grandfather, brother

Just so sorry for early loss. Just saw Dale at Beavers wake and we talked. He looked great. Life is short, he had given Tom and I many laughs. I was always amazed as I walked into the school building watching him coming in to teach after hunting early hours and continuing after work hours hunting. True outdoorsman and loved nature. Keep in touch my Birthday twin and stay strong and busy through this tough time. I’m sure it’s been tough already. Love, Terri and Tom

When I’m nervous in any given situation, I have an event that I reference in my head. I remember hearing and then seeing the video that Dale shared with me.
